****Scenery****
The scenery is simply awesome. St Vincent is a mountainous island with many peaks and troughs and whilst the island isn’t that big this constant “up and down” means it takes ages to get anywhere. Vincentians are very welcoming and friendly, although I guess most of this is down to curiosity. Out of Kingstown, the capital of the island, and in the more remote areas there are very few tourists and it is a bit of a “yocals” place. Very few Caucasians visit this area and when they do the locals want to know why you are there and what you are doing. Despite the “white” comments, all of which were non-malicious the locals are generally accommodating once you get talking to them, although I did find it intimidating at first.
****Getting around****
St Vincent is not that big although you will need access to a vehicle in order to get around. The locals use a bus service and it is absolutely brilliant, as well as an experience in itself.
The buses are, basically, vans (mostly small Toyotas) that are kitted-out with bench seats in the back. All the buses are customised with very bright and distinctive paint jobs, loud sound systems, blacked out windows and body kits. As its name suggests this was the long awaited sequel to American Pie and it took nearly 2 years to get it in the cinemas. Launched in 2001 this film was really hyped up and had a lot to live up to and it did not disappoint. Time has moved on and our four heroes, being Jim (played by Jason Biggs), Oz (played by Chris Klein), Kevin (played by Thomas Ian Nicholas) and Finch (played by Eddie Kay Thomas) have just completed their first year of college. The boys re-unite and decide to kick back and spend the summer at Stifler’s (played by Sean William Scott) beach house. The pick-up truck is loaded and the boys head off to the beach with the only thing on their minds being booze and birds.
Since the last film Nadia has gone back home but Jim has kept in touch with her throughout his first year at college. Nadia (played by Shannon Elizabeth) is now travelling but is intending to get to the beach house for the party to end all parties and hook up with Jim. Jim is concerned over his lack of experience and seeks the advice of Michelle (played by Alyson Hannigan) who has gone to band camp. Jim decides to break in to band camp and is taught the art of armor by Michelle after dark. Jim and Michelle’s relationship blossoms and when the crunch time arrives Jim decides that it is Michelle who has captured his heart. Nadia, of course, is upset but finds Sherman “the Sherminator” (played by Chris Owen) more than happy to be a shoulder to cry on.
Despite going to different colleges Oz and Heather are still together and have managed to keep their long distance relationship going. Whilst Oz does have a sizeable part in this film it is not the same extent as in the first. Oz’s storyline is, in my opinion, quite boring. This is not such a bad thing because Oz is not the most charismatic of individuals in this film.
Kevin and Vicky (played by Tara Reid) decided to call a break before they went to college to enable them both to grow, develop and experience new things. When Vicky arrives at the beach house Kevin’s feelings come flooding back although these aren’t reciprocated, which Kevin finds difficult to deal with. Kevin does not have as big a part as he did in American Pie, but just like Oz he is not charismatic and, in my opinion, not that funny. I suppose this is the difficulty these actors have to face when there is such a star studded and talented cast.
Finch is finding it difficult to let go and has been saving himself for his true love. He has been practising the art of tantra and plans to use this very soon. Finch gets excited when he hears that there will be a guest appearance at the party and immediately begins to prepare, although he is disappointed when the guest of honour actually arrives.
Whilst Stifler had a sizeable part in American Pie this film enabled Sean William Scott a proper chance to show what he can do and he did not disappoint. For me, it is Stifler, and his many one liners that make this film.
Almost all of the characters from American Pie make an appearance in the sequel, including Jim’s dad who is on hand to help his son out in embarrassing and difficult situations.
American Pie 2 depicts the division of the group and tracks the development specific individuals, namely Jim and Michelle. Whilst the other characters do have their own story lines dealing with other relationship issues these are, in my opinion, bland and do take second fiddle to that of Michelle and Jim, which is subsequently carried on in to the next sequel, the aptly named American Pie 3.
I did not find American Pie 2 as funny as American Pie. Maybe I was expecting too much? That said, there are some very comical parts. The most memorable for me involve super glue and top shelf magazines, a trumpet and a pair of walkie talkies. American Pie 2 is still much better than many other teen movies and well worth a watch.
