Coral Bay is a beautiful place to visit for a holiday. The sea is clean and a clear blue.

When I was there on holiday, I stayed in my apartment, which is situated only down the road from Coral Bay in a small place called Peiya, which is where my family and I live now.  Every day we drove into Coral Bay, which took only five minutes. There are lots of water sports available on the beach, such as para-gliding, scuba diving, glass boat trips (which is a must), jet skis, banana rides, water skis, speed boat hiring, pedaloes, windsurfing and canoes.

There are also plenty of places to eat and drink just up the road from the beach. In the evening we went to a taverna and bar where there was a pool table for the kids and the owners let them play on this free of charge. The people there were very polite and generous. Coral Bay, also, has a few shops which do come in handy too, especially the supermarket.  It is not a place for lots of night life. It mostly caters for families and couples and is generally a quiet place to stay.  Personally, I like a quiet and relaxing holiday and that’s what it was. Of course, it was the month of March when we were on holiday here, so there it was quiet, as there isn’t much open that time of year.

There is transport in the form of a bus and this runs until eleven o’clock at night in high season and only until six in the evening in low season.  Car hire is another way to get around, especially if you want to head out further afield, such as visiting Troodos mountains, Nicosia (the capital), Polis and Latchi Beach.  From Coral Bay you can visit the centre of Paphos. There you can visit shops, tavernas and bars. There is a harbour at Paphos where you can take a stroll in the day or night.  We sometimes come here and have an ice cream whilst taking a stroll. There is a water park in Paphos too and this is an excellent day out.  Bus routes go to Paphos everyday for just one euro and fifty cense.

Of course, the best part is the weather, as it is pleasant in March and it get’s better and warmer by April, sometimes reaching 80 farenheit during the day, but pleasant in the evening.  Cyprus rarely has rain in the summer months.  I have experienced many wet rainy days here now, but by April it is dry.  November is the start of the rainy season with an odd day of rain here and there.  It usually only rains during the winter months, which is January and February.

As we stayed in our apartment, we only had to pay for our flights, which we booked via the Internet and paid £150.00 per person. You can actually book an apartment or villa separate to your flight if you want a self catering holiday on the Internet using a Cypriot Estate Agent. They rent properties out much more cheaply than booking it as a package holiday.  Do a search on the internet for holiday rentals in Cyprus.

If you travel earlier in the year you can actually get flights and accommodation a lot cheaper with package deals.  Hunt around for these, because sometimes Thomas Cook Holidays may have some cheap package deals for Cyprus at the moment.

The Amanpulo Resort Palawan is on the secluded private island of Pamalican, enclosed by a hillside and over 5 kms of white sandy beaches. Rooms are in a cottage style and have magnificent amenities. They are linked by small roads and walkways that lead to the beach and to the resort’s facilities. The Amanpulo Resort Palawan is ideal for either business or leisure trips.

More than just a beach resort, Amanpulo (peaceful island) is set on a coralline island all its own. Pamalican floats in the brilliant-blue waters of the Sulu Sea. Seven square kilometers of reef rim the island. Beyond are sandbanks and a channel, where whales, dolphins and sea cows have been known to stray. At its widest point, the 5.5-kilometer island of Pamalican is only 500 meters across. Located among the Quiniluban group of the Cuyo Islands, Pamalican is one of nearly 1,800 islands in the province of Palawan. The largest province in the Philippines, Palawan is about 600 kilometers south and southwest of Manila.

the resort

Amanpulo is an escape from the markings of mankind and is a dive into island life where nature has been unashamedly boastful. The island is secluded, being private, and offers a variety of sea, sand and tropical island-retreat–pleasures, in exclusive comfort and in traditionally styled accommodation. Amanpulo or, ‘peaceful island’, honours its island host, respecting the natural elements with a profoundly ‘South Seas’ interpretation. The 40 Beach, Hillside and Treetop Casitas are modelled on authentic bahay kubo dwellings, each with its own golf cart for island exploration.

This romantically remote island caters for those who wish to ‘hammock’ and beach comb their days in paradise, and for those who seek an active agenda, involving a myriad of maritime adventures as well as tennis, a high-tec air-conditioned gym, and taking languid lengths in the resort’s 30m serene pool. The open-air Garden and Beach Salas are discreetly secluded for pleasurable holistic body treatments.

Location

Amanpulo is set on its own private island: Pamalican is among the Quiniluban group, which makes up the northern half of the Cuyo Islands. The southern half is called the Cuyo group. Pamalican is one of the nearly 1,800 islands in the province of Palawan. The largest province in the Philippines, Palawan is about 600 kilometers south and southwest of Manila. Pamalican is a low-lying coralline island covered with a sandy jungle of scrub and thorn-bush thickets. At its widest point, the 5.5-kilometer island is only 500 meters across.

Accommodation

The resort’s 40 casitas, 65-square-meter bungalows in hillside and beachside settings, are modeled after the Philippine bahay kubo (native hut). Inside, decorative details reflect the islands: pebble-washed walls; coconut-shell and seashell tables; rustic Palawan rice and knife baskets; a king-size bed with a rattan headboard; sliding glass doors that reveal outdoor decks and his-and-her divans. Nearly half the space in a casita is given over to a Cebu marble bathroom, with twin vanities, separate changing areas, a shower and an elegant bathtub lit by twin wood windows.

Amanpulo’s 29 beach casitas come with a private path that leads through a tangle of bush directly onto a white-sand beach. Four treetop casitas climb with the palm trees above the island. Of the seven hillside casitas, two offer especially fine views: sunrise and sunset are visible from casita #39; from the 250-liter, marble bathtub in #40, take in the beach and watch the sun set into the Sulu Sea. The casitas are linked to the resort’s facilities by sidewalk-size roads. Guests get around on open-sided, gasoline powered carts, one to each casita.

Amanpulo also has its own private holiday villa for rent. Casa Kalikasan is a luxurious, four-bedroom residence located just a few meters from the sea. The 4,140-meter compound counts nine separate salas, including a lounge, a dining pavilion, a fully equipped kitchen and a beach pavilion, all designed around a grass courtyard. Villa guests have access to all Amanpulo facilities and services. Three staff, permanently assigned to the villa, look after guest needs.

Facilities and Services

The Clubhouse

Amanpulo’s central building is the light-filled Clubhouse, where guests are received. The resort lounge and most of its public facilities are located here.

Restaurant and Bar

The Restaurant, located in a wing at one end of the Clubhouse, spills out onto a terrace, with views to Manamoc Island across the channel. There’s also a regular lechon (roasted pig) barbeque at the Picnic Grove (weather permitting), with its purpose-built barbeque pit and tandoori oven. The Beach Pavilion offers light meals and refreshments. Enjoy the views from the Clubhouse Bar or take your drinks outside onto the terrace. Private dining is available day and night.

Swimming Pool

Amanpulo’s 30-meter swimming pool is bordered by neem trees and two trellises that spill over with boungainvillea. Large, open-air salas are arranged on expansive green behind the pool. The salas come with larger-than-king-size mattresses for all-day, poolside lounging. The pool’s aqua tiles mimic the Sulu Sea’s reef waters.

Beach Pavilion

Stone steps lead down from the pool to the sand beach and Amanpulo’s own Beach Pavilion. Sunlight and shadow rake the open-air Beach Pavilion, a tranquil escape. Half-a-dozen, sand-white mattresses with matching pillows are spread out on the deck, facing the sea. Rattan stools line the Beach Pavilion Bar, and beach umbrellas set in stone tables are coupled with reclining beach chairs.

Library

The plank-floored library is stocked with novels in several languages, children’s books, travel guides, magazines and coffee-table books on Philippine art, design and culture. Laser-discs and CDs are also available.

Gallery and Boutique

Amanpulo’s two shops specialize in craft from the Palawan region, and are stocked with island beach wear, woven rugs and baskets, jewelry, pottery and other items.

Massage and Beauty Services

The two resident masseuses combine Swedish reflexology with shiatsu massage and offer a range of aromatherapy treatments in the privacy of your casita. Manicures, pedicures, hairstyling, facials and body treatments are also available.

Playground

A smartly designed children’s playground , with swings, slides, basketball stands, equipment and picnic tables, is located in the sand near the Picnic Grove.

Meeting Room

Small meetings can be arranged in one of the Clubhouse rooms. Audiovisual equipment is available on request.

Medical Services

A resident nurse is available day and night.

Airport

The island’s 1.2-kilometer runway is lit for night landing and manned by Amanpulo’s air-traffic controllers.

Activities

Tennis

Two flood-lit tennis courts are located just behind the Clubhouse, with rest salas for drinks and light meals. Balls, rackets and playing partners are available, free of charge.

Star Gazing

Study the planets from the terrace of the Clubhouse Bar. Here, Amanpulo puts out two 850×90 mm astronomical refractor telescopes. Twice a week, trained staff are happy to guide you into the heavens.

Nature Treks

A walk around the island’s sand beach will take about two hours. There are also a number of bush paths and two modest hills to explore. At low tide, baby sharks chasing bait fish are sometimes seen in the shallows at Pamalican’s southern end. Turtles nest annuallyon the island. Starlings and kingfishers, black-naped orioles, sea eagles, egrets and two dozen more species make their seasonal home on Pamalican and its surrounding shores. Detailed information is available in the library. Amanpulo’s own island bird postcards are provided nightly during turn-down service.

Fish Feeding

Mornings, the tropical fish take their breakfast by the Beach Pavilion shore; late in the afternoon, follow the colorful parade from the deck of one of Amanpulo’s pontoon boats. Bring your snorkeling equipment for a close-up look. Throughout the day, the fish can ofter be hand-fed in knee-deep water by the Beach Pavilion.

Picnics

Picnic lunches can be organized in the Picnic Grove or any of a number of island hideaways. Picnic baskets may also be delivered to your casita.

Mountain Bikes

Along with mountain bikes, children’s bikes are also available on request.

Water Sports Activities

Sailing

The brilliant-blue waters of the Sulu Sea are superb cruising grounds. Amanpulo keeps a variety of boats for island hopping, deep-sea fishing and lazy-day sailing. The Hobie Sports 21, a twin-hulled cruiser, is made for fun, and guests get a 30-minute, complimentary ride during their stay. Amanpulo also maintains a smaller catamaran (a Hobie 16), as well as two Lasers and a fast-planing, fiberglass ski boat. Sailing lessons are available. Dolphin I, Amanpulo’s 31-foot fiberglass Gulf Craft, handles everything but the longest charters. A later version, Dolphin II, is three feet longer and equipped with a Yamaha 200hsp twin engine. Dolphin II can take up to 10 guests on half-day and full-day charters. Rounding out the fleet are two spacious pontoon boats – double-decker party boats for snorkeling and sunbathing, as well as sunset cruises and cocktails.

Windsurfing

Amanpulo is a magnet for beginners as well as experienced windsurfers. The island’s sand-bottom blue lagoon, located on the windward side, makes for world-class board sailing from December through April. During this period, the northeast trade winds blow, on average, about 20 knots an hour. A Neil Pryde test center, Amanpulo is able to provide top-of-the-line equipment, from 3.6-meter wave sails to 6.5-meter V6 slalom sails, along witha variety of slalom boards and rigs. Amanpulo’s Windsurf Hut is located under a canopy of trees just back of Pamalican’s east-coast beach.

For certified divers, there are a number of fine sites on both sides of Pamalican, all within easy reach by dive boat. (Certified divers should bring their C-cards with them; non-certified divers are advised to bring a medical certificate.)

All equipment is provided by Amanpulo’s Dive Shop. Underwater lights are also available. Divers must be at least 12 years of age. Programs are subject to availability.

If your Mallorca villa rental is located in Puerto Pollensa, then you may want to ensure that you are located as near to the beach as possible. So, if you’re planning a Mallorca villa holiday with your family and have young children, you should definitely consider staying near the white sandy beach of Pollensa. Puerto Pollensa is a mooring point for yachts and brightly coloured fishing boats, which have in the past few years sadly decreased to be the minority. Families staying in a Mallorca villa rental in this area can also take advantage of the number of seafood restaurants located on the seafront, which are said to be amongst the best in the country.

Albercutx beach is equally as sandy as Puerto Pollensa, but is bordered on all sides by the famous Pine Walk. It is perfect for strolling along on a lazy summer evening and the calm bay makes it a popular destination for watersports and paddling.

If you’re looking for a more active break and considering taking a villa holiday in Mallorca with your equally active friends, then you may want to forgo the calm bays of Albercutx and Pollensa for the more thrilling Cala San Vicenc.

This beach is popular with surf types, as the coves are more open to the sea, resulting in a number of ‘big rollers’. Cala San Vicenc is also the perfect location in which to wine and dine a loved one on your Mallorca villa holidays. The cosy restaurants dotted around the bay are popular for their famous paella, whilst the steep steps leading from the restaurants to the sea provide the ideal spot in which to relax and simply watch the moonlit water rippling against the bay.

Puerto Pollensa is a great destination in which to take a Mallorca villa holiday, but you may also want to consider Cala d’Or, which is situated on the south-east coast of the island.

The area is made up of a range of fine sandy beaches which visitors can reach via a popular land train. Of all the beaches, Cala Gran is the largest, but at just 40m long can rarely be described in this manner. However, Cala d’Or from which the resort takes its name is easily the most popular beach, and as it remains crowded throughout the peak summer season, having a Mallorca villa nearby should secure your family a prime spot, if you can get up early enough.

If you don’t like the thought of sunbathing on a crowded beach, you may want to take the lead of many Mallorca tourists in-the-know and catch the holiday bus to El Trenc. El Trenc is a beautiful beach of clear water and white sands on which it is possible to spend an entire day of your Mallorca villa holiday. The beach has enough to occupy children and families, whilst couples may want to spend some time walking amongst the nearby pine dunes before sampling a delicious meal in the bar-cum-restaurant which is located close to the water’s edge.

If you’re a baseball fan then a stop at “The Ripken Experience” is a must or you can even book in your entire baseball team to experience a tournament baseball on a professional major league quality field. Restaurants are plenty but no trip would be complete without a stop at Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville.

Water activities include boating, fishing, surfing, kayaking, scuba diving to name a few. However, crystal blue water and 60 miles of beach means the perfect place to lie around and simply sunbathe.

Miami Beach

Located in the southern part of Florida and known worldwide as SoBe (South Beach) the Miami Beach area is not limited to the normal beach side activities. The unique immigrant Cuba culture is visible in the pastel colors that dominate homes, shops, restaurants and bars.

Made famous by movies like Scarface and Cage au Folles and television shows like CSI Miami the most memorable part of SoBe is the Art Deco National Historic District that is comprised of a few dozen ’20s and ’30s buildings that have characteristic pastel colors and streamlined rectilinear forms. Miami Beach definitely lives up to its lively party town image.

Cancun Beaches

Cancun, Mexico, with its vast array of beaches is one of the most romantic of vacation getaways. Accommodations range from standard hotels to beachside villas and private homes. The Caribbean side and Lagoon side provide for an endless array of water sports and sunbathing.

Nightlife includes salsa, cumbia, club mixes and world beats. End your days with a couple of cold cervezas and a quiet cigar and you’ve come as close to perfection as possible.

Ka’anapali Beach

Located on the island of Maui, Ka’anapali Beach is a 3 mile stretch of sand and blue ocean heaven. Relax on the beaches and in the gardens and enjoy as the Hawaii Kings and Queens did years gone by. Maybe you will even be able to feel the spirit of the ancient Hawaiian warriors that use to use the area as a training ground.

Other activities include the Ka’anapali Historical Tour, the History and Legends Tour and the free whaling museum. If you’re looking to spend a little time golfing then choose between the Royal Ka’anapali par 71 course or the Ka’anapali Kai par 70 course each offering panoramic views of neighboring islands.

Cable Beach

While there are a number of gorgeous beaches in Australia Cable Beach in Broome in Western Australia is a sight to behold. Located about 2200 kms from Perth, it takes 2.5 hours to fly there. Pristine white sand stretching along the turquoise water’s edge is enough to take your breath away and make the extra distance worth the effort it takes to get there.

The year round tropical climate offers opportunities for any number of water sports and even parasailing. For the more adventurous, a sunset camel trek is just the thing.

Phuket has many impressive and unusual villas. As a place that caters to luxury living, the building of luxury villas is not surprising. Among the many villas valued in the Millions of US dollars, a villa in Talang is unusual in many aspects. Most of the exclusive villas here are set on a hillside overlooking the beach, usually in gated communities. This property defies expectations with a natural and lush environment, surrounded by trees, chirping birds and natural water features. A property like this set on several acres is unusual indeed.

Marc De Champeaux is the owner of The Gallery, an exclusive showroom for Chinese art, from traditional to contemporary. De Champeaux, who was born in New York, moved to Phuket about five years ago, after spending many years in other parts of Asia. He grew up in Paris where he first developed his design sense, before later spending twenty years living in China. While in China, De Champeaux got involved in the garment and fashion industry, including creating a fashion brand for Chinese youth. This grew over time to a brand with seventeen shops in various cities around China. His shops in Phuket, The Gallery, offer many varieties of Chinese antiques, and an assortment of carved figures and paintings. Oil paintings of late Chairman Mao Tse-Tung and other political statement art is on show in his shops.

When you enter his villa from the road, you are led through a natural garden with trees all around you, water features offering soothing sounds as you near the house. The villa itself is entered through a long elevated deck, bordered on one side by a long infinity pool. Behind the pool and fading off to the distance is a tropical forest with a big pond and some unusual natural features, including fields and varieties of Palm. On the left as you enter, sit a series of long minimalist structures, joined in form and detailing by the deck on which you stand. As you enter the main central building, a cavernous room opens up in front of you. A large great room presents itself as a vast space, shaped and adorned by countless pieces of contemporary art as well as traditional. The initial feeling is one of the space having been designed for the art, acting as a mere frame for the work within. The sense of ample room, easily fitting a massive sofa, which seems to be able to seat twenty by itself, a large billiards table and a generous dining area is palpable. Between the art around and above you, and the well arranged décor, the room does not feel cold or overbearing but welcoming instead, yet the space is so large, it can easily contain an interior water feature with a lovely pond full of carp. The eye works the room, glancing at the art from piece to piece, darting from painting to sculpture and back. The structure is black and the ceiling and furniture white so the artwork itself is given centre stage with it’s variety of colour.   The construction has been handled in a minimalist way, as a set of hangars where the air moves freely, green plants and trees enter the space and the landscape itself becomes part of the design. The walls are almost exclusively glass but maintain  privacy through the use of natural vegetation. The central space opens up towards the pool and view, with the main deck becoming part of it, part interior, part exterior. With  large trusses supporting the simple roof above, two large Chinese sculptures guard each side of the main deck as though gazing at the view themselves.

A massive canopy protects one side of the deck from the blazing sun, also hanging over the pool itself, creating a visual link towards the view. The large wooden plank floor also reinforces the art gallery feeling that pervades the main living area. On either side of the main building, sit two ancillary bedroom buildings where a variety of bedrooms take advantage of fuller and thicker vegetation for increased privacy. These bedrooms are also well supported by art pieces and make each room unique both in view and in decoration. Returning to the main room, a large industrial kitchen affords the luxury that few restaurants even have, the space to cook for dozens simultaneously. Overall, this property is unique in Phuket and allows the visitor to see what can be achieved with a remarkable site and great design vision.   For more information please contact Blueprint Unique Living.  Words by Michael Earle.

Bali resort villas offer a unique way to enjoy your stay on the Island of the Gods, and are more popular than ever.
